Juneberry is a large shrub cultivated mostly for its delicious and healthy fruit. It is a large deciduous shrub or a small tree.
Flowers are star-shaped, white and scented and appear in mid spring. Oval leaves are up to 8 cm long, emerge bronze and mature to green colour, turning scarlet red or deep pink in autumn.
The fruit are purple-blackish berries, 1 cm in diameter and ripens in early summer. They are sweet and juicy and can be picked up for as long as one month. They look like blueberries.
If you want to keep this shrub smaller prune it every year at the end of winter. It needs fertile, acidic, lime-free, moist but well-drained soil. Fully hardy to -34°C (USDA zone 4).
