Daylilies are flowering queens for one day. Each bloom lasts a day but there is no need to worry – every stem bears more blooms and as the plants grow older they have numerous stems each. This low-maintenance perennial is a miracle for those who have limited time to spend looking after their gardens because apart from occasional watering on hot and dry summer day it needs ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. And still it can leave us gazing at their beautiful, lily-like blooms of every possible colour you can think of (except for blue and black).

Bertie Ferris is an award-winning daylily with 6-7 cm across, broadly bell-shaped, wide-open flowers with delicate ruffling of the main petals. Their colour varies a great deal depending on the growing location – ranging from dark gold to tangerine orange with salmon tones. Flowers open from around mid-June atop approx. 50 cm tall stems, and well-established plants under ideal conditions re-bloom in August or they may just continue blooming without interruption from June to August. The leaves are strap-like, medium green, deciduous. It was bred and introduced in 1969 by Ury and Elna Winniford.

Ury Winniford (1909-2001) from Dallas, Texas, USA, was an American daylily breeder who, together with his wife Elna, received many awards for their work. The most important one, in the entire world of daylilies, is undoubtedly the Stout Medal Award, the highest achievement given to a quality cultivar, and they received it 1983 for the cultivar Bertie Ferris, which also became the daylily of the year three years earlier. When Ury was asked about his breeding goals, at first, he was unsure how to answer and simply said that he had to like what he saw. But he immediately added that the sepals must definitely not be pointed; they always had to be round. Later in his career, he did add some other goals, such as the early opening of flowers so that, according to him, they would be looking at him with their heads held upright and already open as soon as he entered the garden in the morning. The international register includes 237 of their recognized cultivars.

The leaves are deep green, strong and healthy. They appear early in the spring and persist until winter unlike spring bulbs whose leaves wither away after flowering. Apart from occasional slug attack there are no pests or diseases they would suffer from. Put your day lilies on a sunny spot and fertilize it for better flowering every spring, if you want to. It tolerates all types of soil, preferably it likes moist soil. Very hardy to min. -40 °C (USDA zone 4).
