Who would have thought that something like this could happen. In our country. Three days before Christmas. The words "we are very sorry" cannot embrace the sorrow we share with the rest of the country. Our deepest sympathy to the families and closest friends and colleagues.

Autumn in Prague06.11.2023
How often do you really notice what's growing around on your way to and from work? I know that an every-day journey may turn somewhat dull but only if you don't notice what's changing. And autumn landscape is changing beautifully and fast - there's something new every day - a new colour in every corner of public greenery if you live in town. And for the lucky ones driving through the countryside who can enjoy the wilderness of trees and shrubs growing in meadows and forests.

This is a small tribute to my city journey to work in Prague. Especially the roof-top garden of CSOB bank and its surroundings are quite impressive these days.

This week's eyecatcher02.11.2023
Have you, too, noticed that glowing shade of carmine red in the past days? Leaves on mid-sized shrubs in both gardens as well as in public greenery. And if you take a closer look at the shrub you will see very interesting winged branches. You got it by now? It is Winged euonymus :-) Its colour cannot be missed and even though it does not last more than a couple of weeks it's worth every minute you stare at it.

Gorgeous trumpet vines - flowers all summer long20.08.2023
Trumpet creepers were one of the first summer flowering plants I enthusiastically promoted as a novice gardener many years ago because they were my love at first sight. And you know what? That love proved to be lifelong and undying. Quite possibly it is getting stronger as the plants in my garden are getting bigger and produce more and more flowers. The display is just breathtaking. We talked about their species and varieties in this video, and today I want to convey at least a little of their beauty that I have had the pleasure to watch in the last few days or weeks.
Gorgeous trumpet vines - flowers all summer long20.08.2023
This is probably my most favourite species - Chinese trumpet vine. I made the picture in Italy a couple of weeks ago under tepreatures reaching almost 40 C. It is clear that only newly emerging flowers are typically salmon pink and soon turny gold orange under the extremely hot Tuscan sun.

Here is a comparison - pictures from Italy (left) and from Czechia (right).

Another gem is Madame Galen, a variety of Italian trumpet vine hybrid. It bears large, soft red flowers composed in overhanging racemes, just like Chinese trumpet vine which is one of its parents.

There are several red-flowered varieties of trumpet vines. Want to know a secret tell which distinguishes Madame Galen from the others? Look closely at the petals - they all show a profile in a form of a letter V outwards, especially the largest lower petal. Can you see it?

Trumpet vines are not just about flowers. They boast lush foliage, so vibrant - dark green, healthy and very glossy. They quickly form a mass covering its support which is another reason to get (at least) one.

Holidays25.07.2023
That's right - the holiday bliss is here which means one thing: you're on vacation and we're taking care. Seems fair, doesn’t it? 😊 In other words, while you're on vacation admiring different flora, culture, people, prices, etc., we're here taking care of all our flowers and trees and shrubs that you'll come for as soon as you will find beach sand in all your body cavities including those, which you didn't know were hollow; when you find that there’s something beautiful everywhere, but your garden is the thing that fulfils you most and communicates with your soul much better than bazar stallholders; or simply when the omnipresent holiday chaos overwhelms you so much that you will seek peace and serenity in the midst of your own greenery, even though there is no sea or breathtaking ancient sights. But for now, enjoy your holiday, bathe and swim, try exotic meals and drinks, make trips and have fun, and when you feel like you’ve had it all, call by, we have something for everyone, I promise 😉 Just look …

Mountain laurels25.06.2023
I usually remember when I encounter a beautiful plant for the first time, but with kalmia (mountain laurel) I sort of can't remember the very first moment, or rather I'm not sure if this was the first one. I remember choosing some large plants in an Italian nursery almost 15 years ago. They offered me beautiful shrubs of a kalmia myrtifolia (subspecies of k. latifolia). The grower did not know much about it (which is a euphemism for he knew sod all), he just assured me that the plant would definitely grow in our climate … Well, I checked a few encyclopaedias, and you know what? He was right. The plant was rated hardy to USDA zone 4. Those plants were really stunning, quite big, some 60-70 cm tall and wide, and it was explained to me that their price was high because of slow growth. Honestly, I did not care, I simply loved them instantly. Not just for their appearance but because they were evergreen! I could not wait for their numerous flower buds to burst out and when they did, I was staggered and felt like I would never stop photographing them.

One of those beauties I kept for myself, for my own garden and gave it a place of honour right next to the swimming pool to watch it when I was swimming there, enjoying the beauty of the surroundings. It was a perfect plant for a perfect spot. For some 2 years only, though. The shrub started losing leaves and defoliate tops of the branches. After a quick investigation I realized that it was due to the clay soil it was put in. In order to save it I moved it to another location with better drainage and I lifted it a bit above ground level to make sure it would never stand in water with its surface roots. I radically pruned it and waited 2-3 years before it showed some appreciation for the rescue. It was an important lesson teaching me how (not) to care for a mountain laurel.

Now my garden is flooded with perhaps 15 different varieties. Want to check them out?

Fragrant raised bed29.05.2023
I often draw attention to many scented plants on our website because I believe that fragrance belongs among important features, same as the sense of smell is important to humans. I remember that when I was seriously ill as a child and my parents, after the failure of scientific medicine, started visiting healers with me and sought other alternative ways to help me, we also came across aromatherapy. Initially I did not believe it much as I compared it with the arsenal of pills loaded with all sorts of chemical compounds. Well, they didn't help anyway and more: they did harm so I went for it. I soon realized that the scented essences were making a difference, and if it wasn't the healing itself, at least they brought calming of the senses and helped me establish peace which is one of the first key steps in any healing.

I realize that since then I've been conditioned to perceive all scents (and, unfortunately, bad smells, too) much more strongly. So don’t be surprised when I enthusiastically describe perfumed flowers here 😊. And my garden smells beautiful all year round - from spring till winter. Currently I am enjoying the raised bed above the swimming pool, which was built for several reasons: to prevent streams of rainwater from entering the pool, to create a new level in the garden, and to allow plants that love drier than clay soil to grow happily.
Fragrant raised bed29.05.2023
It has been here for over 10 years and during that time a few plants have changed. Each of them had to show whether they liked the environment or not, and the ones that stayed are great. And many of them are fragrant. Wondering which is which? Let's break them down as a complex sentence 😊
Fragrant raised bed29.05.2023
1. I don't want to lower the importance of others but number one is the key here. And my personal hero. It is Mexican mock orange and its flowers have a strong and sweet scent. This is Aztec Pearl.

3. another masterpiece - evergreen magnolia with large, white, sweetly lemon-scented flowers all summer long, this is Goliath

4. we all know lavendrs and their spicy aroma which reminds us of the Mediterranean, this variety is low growing Essence Purple

Another fragrant item does not have a number since you cannot see it here but you can smell it deep, sweet fragrance - foxglove tree. Its large violet funnels top a dome-shaped canopy and it is situated the way that it does not cast shade over the pool in summer.

8. the last beauty to literally top this bed is a variety of common alder which is truly anything but common - its name is Imperialis and it makes fluffy veils of delicate foliage, it needs to be pruned not to grow too tall

New Year's Japanese maples06.01.2023
Happy New Year, our dear green-finger friends. Last May we visited an important German rhododendron nursery H.Hachmann, where we shot a fairly comprehensive video mainly about rhododendrons and azaleas. In addition, the owner of the nursery, Holger Hachmann, broadened our horizons by talking about his passion for Japanese maples, so we included a short note about them in the video and promised to share with you some of the photos we took there later.

Well, there were over a thousand images made during the visit, so it really took a while to sort them 😊 Now they are all processed and I am presenting the best of Japanese maples as our New Year's gift to you. You can solely enjoy the gallery where you can simply admire their immense beauty, or you can click on the links to our e-shop so you can either study more about each variety or buy it right away if available. And since I know there are many collectors and lovers of unusual plants among you, we have included a special order option for those varieties which we do not have on our website but H.Hachmann Nursery currently has them available. Often in limited quantities only so the sooner you order the better.

In any case enjoy these pictures showing a huge range of leaf forms, plant habits, and fantastic colours you may have never seen in a Japanese maple yet. Do you like puzzles? Here’s a little one: I inserted pictures of two varieties that were NOT photographed in the German nursery but in the Czech Republic. Can you tell which ones? A little advice – observe the surroundings, that’s the tell 😊 Keep well and don’t forget to order in time. And remember that in January you knock off 10% on all plants if your order is paid for in January.
