Linden trees are usually large plants that can be found in broad avenues, in parks or in old villages. They are beautiful but due to their size only a few gardens can accommodate one. As the demand was so high for smaller-sized plants the breeders came with a few varieties in the last few decades that will also fit into medium-sized gardens.
Greenspire is a variety of small-leaved linden. Its size is reduced to about a half of its parent. The leaves are 8-10 cm large, typically heart-shaped, dark green and glossy. Autumn colour is pure yellow. The shape of the crown is narrowly pyramidal or almost oval and regular without pruning. Greenspire is a profuse bloomer at the beginning of summer. It grows fast. The canopy is dense and casts deep shade.
Grow linden trees in full sun or partial shade. It likes moist but well-drained soil, preferably alkaline or neutral. It can take drought but may get prone to pest and diseases on dry sites. Stake young trees for at least three years from planting. Fully hardy to -40°C (USDA zone 3).
