Dropmore Scarlet is one of the most beautiful honeysuckles with unusual flowers. It is a hybrid between l.hirsuta and l.sepmervirens which means that it can hold a certain portion of leaves in mild winters.
The flowers are 3-4 cm long and thin trumpets of scarlet red colour on the outside and deep orange inside. They do not open wide as on other honeysuckle varieties but there are many of them giving the perfect, orange feel to your trellis for a long time because it keeps on flowering for as long as 3 months. Rounded leaves are opposite and often coalescent which looks as if the stem grew through a plate.
It grows fast and vigorous and can be pruned after flowering. As a climber it needs support – trellis, fence, wall or hedge. It is not picky about soil type but likes fertile and moist but well-drained. It is less prone to aphids in half-shade. Fully hardy to about -40°C (USDA zone 3).
