This wisteria is a cross between Japanese and Chinese wisteria. The result is a compact and fat raceme of slightly fragrant pea-like flowers. Issai is a variety with mauve to violet flowers with a central greenish-yellow blotch. They come out in May along with leaves or after they have emerged and are followed by seed-pods with poisonous seeds. Pinnate leaves look rather exotic and densely cover the plant and its support from the ground level. They are light green.
The support is necessary even for tree forms because the wood of this climber remains very flexible for many years. The plants flower mainly on short spurs so cut back unwanted side branches to 2-3 buds to encourage formation of flowering spurs.
It needs moist, acidic soil. Young plants require a sheltered place, mature plants (and those with a stem) are fully hardy to -29°C (USDA zone 5).
