Bladdernut is a native plant to our climate and country, though it seems a little endangered now.
It is popular for its pendent panicles of fragrant, white flowers with light pink stripes. They are followed by fruit hidden in unusual capsules. The hard, spherical seeds were used for making necklaces and even beads.
The leaves are pinnate, composed of 5-7 individual leaflets of mid green colour with slightly blue-grey underneath. It grows moderately, making upright shoots from the ground that branch out at the top.
It is soil adaptable, provided it is well-drained. It does best in moist soil, full sun or part shade. Fully hardy to -29°C (USDA zone 5).
