Globe flower is a beautiful and usually tall perennial from the buttercup family from moist meadows and wet banks of rivers and ponds. There are 24 species found in Europe, Asia and North America. It mostly prefers cooler to mild climates. In our country, hybrids from the cultorum group, which includes crosses of t. europaeus, t. asiaticus and t. chinensis, are most often cultivated.
Lemon Queen globe flower was selected already in 1920s. It is a medium-tall variety with attractive leaves which create a dense yet fluffy cover about 30 cm high and the flower stems rise well above the foliage level reaching up to 60 cm. They are deciduous, palmate, deeply cut, deep green, glossy, and resemble leaves of aconitum.
The semi-double flowers are rounded like miniature peonies and reach 7 cm in diameter when fully opened. They are lemon yellow and bloom from May to June in the strongest flush and then sporadically rebloom until late summer. They look like lit up bulbs above a green meadow.
Globe flower looks best planted in masses. After flowering, you can cut back the whole tuft to encourage production of both new leaves and a few flowering stems. It loves damp situations and does not mind harsh winter (it comes from Siberia and northern parts of Asia). It will grow in full sun or partial shade, in any soil type including heavy (but not dry) clay, any pH. Hardy to about -40 °C.
