Great thrift or false thrift is a rocky perennial which is native to west coast of Portugal. It is renowned for great durability and reliability which is why all armerias are popular and cultivated almost all around the world where they are hardy. Great thrift has larger (wider) leaves than sea thrift and offers white, pink, red, and magenta flowers.
Ballerina Red is a great thrift variety from the Ballerina series with large, globular flower heads composed of rosy red flowers. Flowers are produced continuously from April till June atop strong, 20-30 cm tall stems. Evergreen leaves are narrowly lanceolate to almost linear, medium green, soft, and form a handsome ground-covering cushion.
Thrifts love open, sunny locations, free draining, and poor to moderately fertile soil. Do not fertilize. They will be happy with a little bit of rain once in a while. What they hate are water-logged (clay-based) soils with standing water during and after the rain, yet they dislike too dry locations. Being used to saline environment they cope well with road salt; therefore, they are ideal alongside streets and pavements which are salt-sprayed in winter. Hardy to min. -24 °C (USDA zone 6).
