PURPLE RAIN™ is a beautiful floribunda rose with intensely colored flowers, bred by Tim-Hermann Kordes and granted a US Patent No. PP21246 in 2010. As a shrub it is a ground-cover variety which was developed from hybridizing Bassino (aka Suffolk) variety, but here we offer it in a tree form as a standard rose. It belongs to the Vigorosa® series by Kordes which includes low-growing, abundantly blooming roses which are either completely or close to 100% disease resistant.
PURPLE RAIN™ rose makes fully double to semi-double, dahlia-like flowers that are glowing purple with a hint of violet or mauve. They are 4-5 cm in diameter and resemble Roxy variety which is pinker. Once the flowers start blooming in June, they bloom almost perpetually until autumn. There is a faint, pleasing perfume. The height of the crown is 40-50 cm and the width is up to 70 cm. Twigs are thinner and slightly arching. Deciduous leaves are medium green, divided into 5 to 7 leaflets, partly glossy. It is very hardy to min. -29 °C (USDA zone 5) and can be cultivated year-round in deep containers.
Planting instructions: Plant it in the same level as it is now in the container. Provide a good support for the stem. Water it well and mulch it for winter. Roses tolerate wide range of soils but thrive in deep, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, in full sun. If you live in a region with harsh and long winters protect the crown and the grafting point with white woven.
Pruning: In spring after danger of all frosts prune the crown lightly to form a solid framework, and remove ill, dry and weak branches. Spent flowers are best removed as they begin to fade. Cut off spent flowering clusters just above the leaf with 5 leaflets. Follow a regular feeding programme during the growing season in order to enhance formation of new flowers.
