STERNTALER® is a hybrid tea rose from the Fairy Tale collection by Kordes Rosen from Germany. It produces large, 10-12 cm wide, fully double, quartered flowers of soft yellow to medium yellow clour. They release a strong but very pleasant fragrance and appear repeatedly in several flushes from June throughout the season. Fading flowers reveal pale apricot to salmon shapes. It makes strong stems ideal for cutting, forming upright, well-branched shrubs about one meter tall. Leaves are healthy, medium green, and partially glossy. Bred by Tim Hermann Kordes in 1995 and US patent No. PP17048 was granted in 2006.

I counted already 7 different plants whose varieties were named using this German word. Do you know what it means? Sterntaler is the original name of a German fairy tale by the Grimm Brothers (The Star Money). It is about a poor, orphaned girl who goes out into the countryside, and all she has is her clothing and a loaf of bread. She is a goodhearted person and during her journey she gives all her possessions away to others in need. She ends up with a shift only and meets a little naked girl begging for it. She does not hesitate to give away her shift, too. At that moment stars begin to fall and turn into silver tolars at her feet. She collects them and returns to the village, never again having to worry about money.

Planting instructions: Prepare a hole of size 30x30 cm. Put your rose in the way that the grafting point is 3 cm deep in the soil. Water well and cover new shoots with soil or bark mulch about 15 cm high. Roses tolerate wide range of soils but thrive in deep, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, in full sun.

Pruning: Cut the branches by about a half in autumn and prune hard to 3-5 live buds in spring after all frosts. Spent flowers are best removed as they begin to fade. Cut off spent flowering clusters just above the leaf with 5 leaflets or deeper if rejuvenating is desired during vegetation and follow a regular feeding programme. STERNTALER® is hardy enough to thrive in a planter, too.
