Tickseed is a popular perennial that will suit both the modern city gardens as well as natural landscapes in the country. American breeder Darrell Probst from Hubbardston in Massachusetts already introduced two tickseed series: BIG BANG™ and LIL' BANG™. Red Elf is a variety from the latter, selected in 2011, and boasts extremely compact growth and profuse and extended flowering.
LIL' BANG™ Red Elf is a hybrid tickseed with small, extremely deep ruby red, almost velvety flowers. They are single, daisy-like, sometimes flushed pale pink, and their ray florets are of uneven size making each flower unique. They come out in abundance from early July until the first frost atop 20-30 cm tall stems which are only upright and strong enough not to bend. The whole plant is extremely uniform, compact, and dense. Leaves are medium green, very narrowly lanceolate. Patent No. PP27918 was granted in 2017.
Tickseed will grow in nearly any free-draining soil, and as it withstands drought it is popular for rockeries. Making it a glowing feature in your perennial bed is the reasonable and expected way of using it. But placing it among small shrubs with different foliage and flowers will mean an honour for this easy and affordable beauty. Deadheading will make the plant nicer and bring forward formation of new flower buds but is not necessary. Fully hardy to at least -29 °C (USDA zone 5).
