Cinquefoil is a popular plant in gardens of various sizes and is often found in city parks and arboretums. They have several flower colours and thanks to zero maintenance they can be planted almost anywhere. One of the largest European nurseries with their own breeding line, and number one in France Minier – Hortival Diffusion introduced two series of cinquefoil with attractive flower colours. One of them is called DOUBLE PUNCH® and the other is ‘ISSIMA®.
RED‘ISSIMA® cinquefoil makes about 3 cm wide, single flowers which are deep scarlet red during cooler days of spring and early autumn, and rather orange on hot summer days. Blooming begins in June and continues until September, perhaps with a little break in midsummer. It makes dense and relatively compact shrubs which are better branched than older varieties Red Ace or Red Joker. Palmately divided leaves are small, medium green, not very showy. Pruning is possible in early spring. Thanks to very little care needed and high resistance to whims of weather, pests, and diseases it is ideal for low maintenance gardens. RED’ISSIMA® cinquefoil was granted a European patent EU 58449 in 2021.
Cinquefoil grows best in well-drained, poor, or moderately fertile soil in full sun. Fast and large growing varieties can be trimmed in early spring. It does not need extra fertilizing or watering once established, though a good selective fertilizer may enhance continuous production of new flower buds. It is fully hardy to abt. -40°C (USDA zone 3), and suitable for outdoor pots down to zone 5, just do not let them dry out completely.
