Zebra grass, formerly known as Strictus, is an old favourite among eulalias. It has stiff, upright, bright green leaves with horizontal creamy yellow stripes which make it the popular zebra appearance. Flowering is quite rare and occurs only in years with long summers and warm autumns. Spike-like flowers are bronze red and glossy and appear just before the frosts.

Eulalia does not tend to be invasive. It is best grown in sunny and warm areas, in almost any well-drained soil with only occasional watering in summer. It hates boggy soil quite surprisingly copes well with heavy clay unless its roots stand in water before they establish. It is recommended to tie up the leaves before winter and cut the clump back in early spring, about 10-20 cm above ground level. Fully hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5).
