Tickseed is a popular perennial that will suit both the modern city gardens as well as natural landscapes in the country. American breeder Darrell Probst from Hubbardston in Massachusetts already introduced two tickseed series: BIG BANG™ and LIL' BANG™. LIL' BANG™ Daybreak is a variety from the latter invented in 2009, and boasts compact growth and profuse and extended flowering.
LIL' BANG™ Daybreak is a beautiful tickseed with eye-catching, daisy-like, golden yellow flowers with deep reddish brown eyes. In fact there is more brown than yellow so it would be no lie to say that the flowers are reddish brown with golden yellow tips and a yellow button in the centre. They come out in abundance from June until the first frost. The stems are upright and strong enough not to bend. They are about 20 cm tall and thanks to continuous branching they will reach some 40 cm by midsummer. Leaves are medium green, narrowly three-lobed. Daybreak is a compact, clump forming, and almost sterile perennial that does not seed around. Patent No. PP27138 was issued in 2016.
It will grow in nearly any soil and as it withstands drought it is popular for rockeries. Making it a glowing feature in your perennial garden bed is the reasonable and expected way of using it. But placing it among shrubs with different foliage and flowers will mean an honour for this easy and affordable beauty. Deadheading will make the plant nicer and bring forward formation of new flower buds. Fully hardy to at least -29°C (USDA zone 5).
