BELONGS TO CATEGORIES | Perennials |
Columbines are common perennials of Czech countryside. They grow naturally in moist sites as well as in crevices of pavements, on stone walls etc. They do well in poor soil and produce colourful flowers where hardly anyone would expect anything to bloom at all. At the turn of the century these plants enjoy their renaissance as more and more varieties combining colours and shapes are becoming available in the market.
WINKY series of columbine comprises of strong varieties of several colors. They form compact and symmetrical clumps which look like precisely hand-tied bouquets. This variety makes deep purple blue to deep violet blue flowers with a white margin on the crown. They come out on 40-60 cm tall, dark purple blue, strong stems that do not tend to break in wind. Flowers are produced from end May until early July. 3-lobed leaves make a neat mound and if they are worn out after flowering just cut them off 5-7 cm above ground to encourage the plant make a new truss that will look great all summer long.
Columbine will grow in poor soil that will not be left too dry. It likes full sun or filtered sunlight. Hardy to about -45°C (USDA zone 2).
