J.C.van Tol variety, more than any other holly, is known for making almost spineless leaves when the plant reaches a height of abt. 1m. They are glossy, deep green to olive green on the undersides.
It is a female veriety bearing showy, bright red berries that appear abundantly and reliably every year in autumn. It is self-fertile so does not need a male pollinator.
It can grow about 2-3m tall in a broadly pyramidal shape. To maintain a compact habit you can prune it 1-2x a year. First, beginning of spring remove all unsightly, dead or too long branches, and then, if needed, in mid-summer trim the ends of branches to encourage branching and make a nice shape.
Hollies prefer acidic, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Grow in full sun or semi-shade, and if possible provide winter shade. Fully hardy to about -24°C (USDA zone 6).
