Red Obelisk is a narrowly pyramidal variety of crabapple. It produces very large and sweetly fragrant flowers from late April until mid May. They open from rich purple pink buds into pale pink flowers, followed by vibrant red fruit, rose-hip-shaped tiny apples that can be eaten if you like somewhat astringent taste.

Leaves are deciduous, broadly ovate, emerge bronze red in spring and mature to dark green in summer. The habit of this tree is quite regular, forming an upright, almost columnar shrub or small tree with age. Pruning is not needed in order to achieve a nice shape but is possible from midwinter until early spring or immediately after flowering.

Apple and crabapple trees will grow in most soils but do best in well-drained but evenly moist, fertile, preferably acid soil for best autumn colours. When planting it, make sure the root-ball is well soaked with water. Fully hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5).
