Iceplant is a beautiful rock garden perennial from South Africa. Delosperma congestum is a very hardy species ideal for rockeries. It grows slowly forming neat and dense cushions of light green, thick, evergreen, water-absorbing foliage above which open daisy-like flowers.
The species of congested iceplant produces rich yellow flowers, 2-3 cm across, flowering in masses from late spring until midsummer, later flowers appear sporadically. There are a couple of unique varieties producing white flowers.
Iceplant loves sunny and dry locations, excess watering could kill this plant. It is best for rockeries with plenty of gritty material, in garden beds and along pavements make sure the soil is sharply drained so that the plant never stands in water. It is said to be hardy down to -34°C (USDA zone 4) under ideal growing conditions.
