Austrian or creeping speedwell is a low-maintenance, mat-forming perennial. Royal Blue is a variety with deep blue flowers on erect, spike-like racemes from late spring until midsummer. They are borne o partially prostrate stems which rise above the ground only about 20 cm and attract butterflies.
Leaves are elliptic to oblong, mid green. The plant forms bushy clumps about 45 cm wide. To prevent drying out from the centre prune flowering stems by half immediately after flowering. The cushion will remain dense and pretty, and there is a good chance for a late summer rebloom.
Speedwell is soil tolerant. It only dislikes clay and wet or boggy soil. It does best in full sun and likes occasional watering in dry summers. Fully hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5).
