Nikko is a variety of deutzia that is nowadays classified as slender deutzia, though formerly it was the only variety of Japanese forma deutzia crenata var.nakaiana. Still, its resemblance to slender deutzia is exceptional, hence its modern name. From the species it only differs with its procumbent yet more compact habit.

From about mid May Nikko deutzia produces 10-15 cm long racemes of snow white flowers. They are decorated with a crown of soft yellow stamens in the centre, and open from small, pearl-like, white buds. Flowering lasts for 3-4 weeks, and then it is best to prune the shrub hard by removing branches with spent flowers. This action will encourage growth of stronger twigs that will bloom the following year. Deciduous leaves are narrowly elliptic, 6-8 cm long, mid green, and turning orange and red shades in autumn.

Deutzias are quite soil adaptable and will grow in sun or part shade, too, but will thrive in full sun and evenly moist soil. This one is great for larger rockeries or in cottage gardens. Fully hardy to about -34°C (USDA zone 4).
