European white birch is an attractive tree which, however, in its basic form is not suitable for small-sized gardens. However, this selection is excellent for every garden or even a tiny spot at your doorway. It is a weeping white birch, called Youngii.
It is commonly 2-3m tall, and in our climate grows up to some 5m when fully mature. It benefits from pruning at young age – when the upper twigs are cut back to say quarter its size in the spring, the twigs will gain extra strength and will sooner grow upwards rather than producing all new twigs hanging downwards from roughly the same spot and thus forming a dense umbrella only.
It likes moist soil but adapts to all soil types, when established it can even accept long, dry summers. Fully hardy to min. -45°C (USDA zone 2).
