Maiden pinks are popular mat-forming perennials from Europe that have been grown for centuries. Leuchtfunk, also called Flashing Light is a variety with small but very attractive, cerise red flowers. This variety lacks perfume but offers a long blooming period – from June until end July, even early August. Still, after the first two months of flowering you can trim the stems to the ground which will result in denser growth especially from the centre of the plant, and it may re-bloom in early autumn.

Deciduous leaves are mid green, narrow and less conspicuous. Alpine pinks love free draining, neutral to slightly alkaline soils. They are excellent for rockeries in full sun. They require no fertilizing or excess watering, still, they do not love extreme drought so check their soil once in a while to make sure it is not too dry. Hardy to about -40°C (USDA zone 3).
