Deciduous broadleaf Hedging plants |
Privet is the number one hedging plant. Atrovirens is a robust variety making narrowly elliptic semi-evergreen leaves of rich green colour. In our climate they usually persist until December, then they dry out and fall down. New twigs are always erect and branching is encouraged by regular pruning.
Pruning or trimming of any kind is possible. You can prune it hard down to 5-year old wood. Such action should be followed by regular fertilizing to enforce new growths. Grow it in full sun or part shade, it can also withstand shaded areas if the shade is not too dark. The soil has to be medium fertile, well-drained. Hardy to about -27°C (USDA zone 5b).
