Perennials Summer blooms |
If there is a perennial heaven, there must be plenty of blanket flowers. This is such a beautiful flowering plant that should not be missing in any bed where bright colours and summer flowering are key features. This variety of blanket flower is a chance seedling that was discovered by Rosemary Hardy in Hempshire, UK, in 2002 among other seedlings of Dazzler variety. It was patented under PP17,092 in 2006.
Oranges and Lemons describes perfectly the colour play of this blanket flower. The inflorescence is composed of tangerine orange and golden yellow disc florets, and orange ray florets with yellow tips. The flowers are sterile and do not seed around. Deadheading is recommended for continuous and prolonged flowering. Deciduous leaves are light green. This variety makes erect stems, about 30-40 cm tall.
Blanket flowers do best in full sun and free-draining, fertile soil (in boggy soil it will most certainly die). If you are worried about your soil type cut the plant back in late summer so it makes new basal growth that usually overwinters well. In well-drained soil it is hardy to about -29°C (USDA zone 5).
