Every breeder dreams of a fantastic result of his work. And even better if the positives are multiplied and negatives eliminated. Sounds like utopia? Well, not always. Fancy having a great tasting blackberry that is so easy to harvest as it has no thorns. By the way, do you know the English legend which says that it should not be picked after Michaelmas (September 29) as the devil has claimed them by spitting and urinating at them. The botanical explanation of this says that at that time the over ripened fruit may be infected by various molds and may be toxic.
VARIETIES:
Oregon Thornless is a fantastic blackberry variety from the leading US blackberry producer: Oregon. It offers high yields of tasty fruit and does not irritate us with thorns. On top of that it has evergreen, deeply cut leaves so the plant looks beautiful even before it sets fruit. The berries are almost black, sweet and juicy, and mature from mid August. You can use them just like traditional forest blackberries – best eaten fresh but also freeze well.
Thornless Evergreen is very similar to Oregon Thornless but of European origin: a lot of quality, sweet and juicy black fruit on thornfree branches. The leaves are evergreen, deeply cut and make the plant look very attractive even without fruit. You can use it just like traditional forest blackberries – best eaten fresh but also freeze well.
Black Satin is another US introduction with small to medium sized berries of slightl sharp flavour. The berries are very juicy and aromatic and mature possibly the earliest among all thornless varieties – as from early August until late September.
Little Black Prince® is a compact, almost dwarf variety with large, symmetrical fruit on one-year-old canes. It is ideal for growin in pots on balconies and patios, but will be happy in a garden, too. Harvest begins in July and continues until autumn. It seldom exceeds one meter tall.
Thornfree is a vigorously growing variety producing long and smooth shoots which make numerous side shoots with flowers in the following year. Fruit is medium sized, very juicy and sweet, and ripens from late August. Leaves are entire (not dissected), evergreen, without spines.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:
Neglected blackberry plant is an impenetrable thicket with less fruit, therefore, regular pruning is advised. Since it sets flowers and fruit on 2-year-old canes, it is recommended that young canes, which grow as long as 4m in the first year, are staked to a vertical support, not left lying on the ground. After the have produced fruit that has been picked up it is best to prune such cane hard or to remove it completely. This way only young and fruiting canes will be present on the plant which will make harvesting much easier.
Blackberries need well-drained, medium fertile, neutral soil, and full sun or dappled shade. If fertilized and watered in dry spells the fruit will be larger and tastier, and in bigger quantity. Fully hardy to approx. -30°C (USDA zone 5).
