CULTIVATION
Raspberries need fertile, well-drained but preferably moist soil in full sun or part shade. The produce long canes which need one year to harden up, and only the following year set flowers and fruit. Stake long canes to a horizontal support to make harvesting easier. They like to spread so root barrier is a good idea. Fully hardy to min. -34°C (or more).
Late and remontant varieties can be pruned in two ways:
Pruning 1 for two harvests - after you harvest fruit in the first year and leave the canes unpruned, just remove the dry racemes with previous year's flowers and immature fruit (in autumn or early next spring), these canes will produce some fruit early in the season of their second year, usually in June or early July. Then they are too exhausted and need to be removed completely.
Pruning 2 for one harvest - if you remove the canes completely after the first harvest, you will encourage growth of new canes from the ground that will have enough strength to produce a lot of fruit on one-year-old canes.
Clever trick for easy care and one harvest every year - make two beds with raspberry plants. Plant bed 1 in the first year. When they produce fruit harvest it and mow bed 1 completely. In year 2 plant new raspberry plants in bed 2. And repeat the same system - wait for fruit and after harvest mow the bed completely. Meanwhile canes in bed 1 will mature to produce abundance of fruit. Repeat this method mowing each bed only every other year and you will always have plenty of raspberries.
