DESCRIPTION

Bear’s breeches is a unique perennial with large, architectural leaves. They are deep green and extremely glossy. Strong plants make long, erect stems with pinkish flowers at the end of summer. It is evergreen in milder parts of Europe.

Acanthus is popular in the Mediterranean where even influenced architecture ages ago. In Roman style it was an attractive decoration of pillars, ledges and gates. It was an important decorative feature for goldsmiths as well as makers of high-class tableware.

We treat is a perennial that dies back every autumn and comes back again in spring. To enjoy the largest possible leaves we suggest mulching it profusely in autumn. Acanthus needs well-drained, fertile soil. It will be happier in temporary drought than waterlogged soil. Fully hardy to about -27°C with mulch protection.
